Anti-reflux (GERD)

Overview:

Also known as GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease), anti-reflux is a common condition in which the esophagus is damaged after repeated occurrences of stomach acid or food coming back up from the stomach. The LES (lower esophageal sphincter) is located where the esophagus meets the stomach and helps to prevent reflux. If the LES is relaxed at the wrong time, reflux occurs.

Symptoms may include but are not limited to:

  • Heartburn (burning in the stomach that you may feel in chest or throat)
  • Sour Taste
  • Regurgitation
  • Sore Throat
  • Difficulty Swallowing

Procedure:

The are three basic treatments for anti-reflux:

  1. Change in Diet
  2. Antacid Medications
  3. Anti-reflux surgery

If the first two treatments don’t work, laparoscopic anti-reflux surgery entails reinforcing the LES. This is done by wrapping the upper part of the stomach around the lower part of the esophagus. A laparoscopic procedure allows the doctors to insert a small video camera into the patient to get a better view.
